  • Your energy usage. The single biggest factor. Bigger bills need bigger systems.
  • Roof complexity. Multiple small planes, steep pitches, tile or flat roofs, and re-roofing needs add labor.
  • Equipment tier. Premium high-efficiency panels and microinverters cost more per watt but produce more per square foot and carry longer warranties.
  • Main panel upgrades. Older homes sometimes need an electrical panel upgrade (~$2,000–$4,500).

Be careful with older articles: the federal residential tax credit (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025. In 2026, the incentives that still matter for California homeowners are:
